'World Swim Day' 🏊‍♂️ 24th October

Welcome to our World Swim Day activities page! World Swim Day is celebrated on 24th October, and it gives us a lovely reason to think about swimming, water and the many memories they can bring back. You don’t need to be a swimmer to join in - there are stories, quizzes, music and plenty to chat about.
We’ll start with a few facts about World Swim Day and waterparks, including how swimming has been enjoyed for thousands of years and how waterparks became popular. Then we’ll share some swimming memories: perhaps learning to swim, visiting the local baths or lido, enjoying a seaside holiday, or watching a swimming gala.
Next comes a swimming memory challenge. See how many swimming-related words, items or memories you can think of together. After that, try the swimming quiz and see what you remember about strokes, swimming equipment and the sport itself.
Our swimming awards and reminiscence activity invites you to think about swimming achievements, special occasions and the people who helped you learn. We’ll also celebrate some famous Olympic and Paralympic swimmers, including the determination and dedication behind their achievements.
Then we’ll take a look at swimming through the ages. How did swimming in the 1950s and 1960s compare with swimming today? You might remember the costumes, pools, lessons, instructors or swimming badges of years gone by.
There’s a little comedy too, with Victoria Wood’s “Swim the Channel” - a chance to enjoy her wonderfully familiar humour. After that, let your imagination make a splash as you design your dream waterpark. Would you choose thrilling waterslides, a wave pool, a lazy river or somewhere peaceful to relax?
We’ll finish with swimming and water-themed songs, followed by a final thought about the pleasures of being in, beside or simply remembering the water. Enjoy the activities, share your memories and join in as much as you like.
