'World Maritime Day' ⚓️ 24 September
Welcome to our World Maritime Day activities! We’re setting sail through history, stories, television and music. Take your time with each round, and share any memories the pictures or songs bring back.
We’ll begin with Ship Recognition and Naming. Can you tell a yacht from a dinghy, or a battleship from a narrowboat?
In Real Ships, Parts 1 and 2, we’ll look back at famous vessels and the people and events connected with them.
Next come the Fictional Ships Quiz, featuring ships and submarines from books, films and television, and the Captains Quiz, where you can name some familiar faces.
Our Music Round brings the voyage to a close. Listen, sing along, and tell us which songs you remember:
“All the Nice Girls Love a Sailor”
“Yellow Submarine” — The Beatles
“Ferry Cross the Mersey” — Gerry and the Pacemakers
“Rock the Boat” — The Hues Corporation
“Sailing” — Rod Stewart
“In the Navy” — Village People
“Let It Be” — Ferry Aid
Which song would you choose for a trip out to sea?
There is also a practical activity suggestion linked to the music ...
“Sailing By” — the familiar music before The Shipping Forecast
Music Round
Enjoy a good old singalong with these nautical songs ...
