Oktoberfest & Germany — Activities Page

Willkommen! Today we are travelling to Germany for a colourful collection of activities inspired by Oktoberfest, German culture, famous people and memorable music.

We begin by discovering the story of Oktoberfest, which started in Munich in 1810 as a celebration of a royal wedding. Our Let’s Talk questions invite everyone to share memories of holidays, festivals, food, music and community celebrations.

Next, test recognition and recall by naming a lively selection of German things, including familiar foods, landmarks, traditional clothing, animals, cars and household names. We also meet some famous Germans from history and today, ranging from composers, thinkers and performers to politicians and sporting stars.

Music plays an important part in the session, with a varied selection of Songs Of The Day:

  • The Happy Wanderer - The Obernkirchen Children’s Choir

  • Falling in Love Again - Marlene Dietrich

  • Lili Marlene - Marlene Dietrich

  • Wooden Heart - Elvis Presley

  • 99 Luftballons - Nena

There is also a practical activity suggestion - Decorate an Oktoberfest Friendship Heart, which encourages creativity and expression.

These dementia-friendly activities encourage reminiscence, recognition, conversation and shared enjoyment. There is no need to complete everything or know every answer - choose the activities that suit your group and allow plenty of time for memories and conversations to develop naturally.

Viel SpaĂź - have fun!
