International Music Day - 1st October

Music can bring back memories, lift our mood and bring people together. For International Music Day, let’s celebrate the songs, performers and instruments that have been part of our lives.

Start with a few facts about the day, then let’s talk: What music do you enjoy? How did you listen to it years ago, and what do you use today - a radio, record player, CD player, phone or something else?

There are plenty of challenges to try together. Name as many musical instruments as you can, recognise musicians and the instruments they play, and have a go at the music quiz. How many Elvis Presley songs and Beatles songs can you remember? See whether familiar album artwork brings its title to mind, then use the photo clues to name some much-loved musicals.

For Simon’s Songs of the Day, enjoy I Write the Songs by Barry Manilow, Music by John Miles and Thank You for the Music by ABBA. Sing along, share a memory, or simply sit back and listen.

There’s no need to know every answer - enjoy where the music takes you!
