Harvest Moon & King Tide

Harvest Moon and King Tide Activities
Autumn brings golden fields, changing leaves, familiar celebrations and a bright Moon rising over the evening landscape. By the coast, it also brings a chance to notice how dramatically the sea can change between low and high tide. This free activity collection uses those sights and sounds to spark recognition, conversation and shared memories.
Begin with Facts About the Harvest Moon. Discover why the full Moon nearest the autumn equinox has its special name and how its light once helped farmers bring in crops after sunset. The Highest High Tides slides then offer a simple explanation of spring tides and the other factors that can make a particular high tide rise even higher. “King tide” is an informal name for an exceptionally high tide; the Harvest Moon does not automatically bring the highest one of the year.
The Let’s Talk slide invites memories of moonlit evenings, harvest time, favourite beaches and harbours. There are no right or wrong answers. A photograph, a song or someone else’s story may be enough to start a conversation.
For a change of pace, try the autumn recognition montages. First, name the crops, wildlife and other signs of autumn in an unlabelled picture, then reveal the labelled answers. A second montage explores autumn festivals and traditions, from Harvest Festival and Halloween to Bonfire Night, Remembrance Sunday and Thanksgiving. It also includes the clocks going back and the welcome warmth of a coal fire. A third montage asks members to identify and name famous autumn characters.
The 20-question Harvest Quiz brings together familiar fruit, vegetables, farming traditions, the Harvest Moon and spring tides. Use the illustrated question sheet on its own, or bring out the version with answers in red when everyone is ready. The questions can be read aloud, discussed together or used simply as prompts for memories.
Music runs throughout the session in Simon’s Song of the Day:
“All Good Gifts” from Godspell draws on the words of the harvest hymn “We Plough the Fields and Scatter.” It may prompt memories of school assemblies and Harvest Festival services.
“Shine On, Harvest Moon” - Laurel and Hardy brings music, dancing and a little comedy from The Flying Deuces.
“Harvest Moon” — Neil Young offers a gentler moment to think about love, dancing and people who have been part of our lives.
“The Combine Harvester” — The Wurzels finishes on a cheerful note with a song many people will remember singing along to.
There is also a slide about the Severn Bore, the remarkable wave formed when a powerful incoming tide travels up the narrowing River Severn. It offers another chance to talk about rivers, coastal trips and the surprising power of the tide.
Finally, there are two practical activity slides - make a Harvest Moon & King Tide collage and Guess The Weight Of The Gourd. Have some fun making whilst listening to the songs.
Choose the activities that suit your group and take them at a comfortable pace. You might spend only a few minutes on a quiz question and much longer enjoying the memory it brings back.
Listen, recognise, remember and talk together.
