Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid – Activities
On 23 September 1969, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid opened in New Haven, Connecticut. That makes 23 September 2026 the 57th anniversary of that opening - a perfect excuse to saddle up and head back to the Wild West!
Starring Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy, Robert Redford as the Sundance Kid and Katharine Ross as Etta Place, the film mixed Western adventure, comedy, friendship and romance. It became a major success, won four Academy Awards, and helped turn Robert Redford into an international star. Its unforgettable soundtrack also gave us B. J. Thomas singing “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.”
To mark the anniversary, this dementia-friendly activities page takes a light-hearted trip into the world of cowboys and Westerns. There are familiar films and television programmes to recognise, famous cowboy actors, Western sayings to remember and discuss, music to sing along with, and a fun Wanted Poster activity.
So put on your cowboy hat, practise your best “Howdy, partner!”, and join me for a little nostalgia, conversation, music and fun — Yee-haw!
