Bubble Gum Day — 30 September

Pop! Chew! Remember! Today we’re taking a nostalgic trip back to the days of the traditional sweet shop, when a little pocket money could buy a paper bag filled with favourite treats.

This dementia-friendly activities page uses sweets, bubble gum and music to encourage reminiscence, conversation and plenty of fun. We’ll remember the sweets we loved as children, the things our mothers used to tell us, familiar sayings and rhymes, and some wonderfully sweet songs from years gone by.

Along the way you can:

  • reminisce about childhood sweet shops and pocket money

  • name some old-fashioned sweets

  • remember things Mother used to say

  • complete familiar sweet sayings

  • finish the titles of sweet-themed songs

  • sing along to “Sugar, Sugar” by The Archies

So unwrap the memories, get those taste buds working and see just how many sweet memories come flooding back! 🍬🍭🫧

Here is a more comprehensive list - https://www.asweetforyou.co.uk/traditional-sweets.php

As well as playing 'Sugar Sugar' by The Archies, you could also ask members to choose a song or two from the above list.

NB Choose safer sweets, i.e. avoid hard-boiled sweets, for this activity.
