"An Apple A Day" 🍏🍎 Johnny Appleseed Day 26th September

An Apple a Day: Johnny Appleseed Day
26 September is Johnny Appleseed Day, marking the birthday of John Chapman, the travelling nurseryman whose apple trees made him an American folk legend. It’s a lovely excuse to celebrate a fruit that brings back so many familiar sights, tastes and memories.
This collection of dementia-friendly activities invites you to explore what grows in a British orchard, finish the names of familiar apple varieties, and recognise apple stories from Snow White to William Tell.
There are sayings to discuss, memories of scrumping, toffee apples and apple bobbing to share, and plenty of ideas for cooking and tasting.
Music is part of the fun too, with The Andrews Sisters’ Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree, The Wurzels’ I Am a Cider Drinker and Don McLean’s American Pie.
Choose the pictures, questions and activities that appeal to your group. There’s no need to remember every answer: the best part is the conversation an apple can start.
