Halloween – A Spooky History!

Join me for a fascinating, fun and sometimes spooky journey through the history of Halloween, from its ancient origins to the costumes, characters, films and music we know today.

This collection of dementia-friendly activities combines history, reminiscence, quizzes, music and conversation, encouraging everyone to share memories, opinions and experiences. There are four chapters to explore, either individually or as a complete Halloween-themed session.

Chapter 1 – Halloween History, Traditions & Foods

Discover how Halloween began, its links with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, and how traditions have changed over the centuries. Explore turnip lanterns, pumpkins, apple bobbing, traditional Halloween foods, games and superstitions. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to remember how Halloween was celebrated in years gone by.

Chapter 2 – Horror Characters & Where They Came From

Meet some of the most famous characters associated with Halloween, including Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, witches, ghosts, werewolves and mummies. Discover the stories, legends and literary origins behind these familiar figures, with opportunities to recognise characters and share favourite spooky tales.

Chapter 3 – Halloween TV, Movies & Music

Take a nostalgic journey through the television programmes, horror films and memorable music that have entertained and frightened generations. Enjoy picture quizzes, movie memories and musical favourites including Monster Mash, Time Warp, Thriller and Superstition. How many can you recognise, and which are your favourites?

Chapter 4 – What Halloween Means to You & All Souls Day, 1st November

Reflect on how Halloween has changed, from a traditional celebration to a major commercial event. Discuss childhood memories, trick-or-treating, costumes, decorations and the environmental impact of modern celebrations.

We also explore All Souls' Day on 1st November, a quieter day of reflection that retains an important place in the religious calendar, accompanied by uplifting and familiar music.

Activities to Enjoy

Throughout the four chapters, you'll find picture recognition challenges, quizzes, music, reminiscence prompts, opportunities for discussion and ideas for practical activities. These can be adapted for groups or enjoyed individually, with an emphasis on participation, enjoyment and shared memories rather than getting every answer right.

Whether Halloween brings back memories of homemade costumes, apple bobbing, spooky television programmes or simply a good ghost story, I hope these activities provide plenty of fun, conversation and a few surprises!
